What your HbA1c is actually telling you

Most clients arrive with a lab report and a vague sense of dread. Somewhere on page two is a number called HbA1c, and somewhere between the doctor's office and home, nobody explained what it actually means.

HbA1c isn't a snapshot. Your blood glucose changes by the hour — after meals, after a walk, after a bad night's sleep. HbA1c is closer to an average: a rough record of what your blood sugar has been doing over the last two to three months, written into the haemoglobin of your red blood cells. That's what makes it useful. It can't be fooled by a good week before a blood test.

In practice, we care about three bands. Under 5.7% is what we'd call normal. Between 5.7% and 6.4% is the pre-diabetic range — not a diagnosis, but a warning that's still fully reversible with the right changes. Above 6.5% on two separate readings is the line most labs use for a diabetes diagnosis. The number itself isn't a verdict. It's a starting point for a conversation.

The number itself isn't a verdict. It's a starting point for a conversation.

What surprises people most is how much of this is quietly earned over years, not caused by any single dessert or missed workout. Late dinners, chronic under-sleeping, sedentary stretches at a desk, and a diet heavy in refined carbohydrate all nudge the number up gradually, long before anyone feels different day to day. That's also the good news — the same slow mechanism works in reverse.

We've watched clients bring a 6.1% down into the mid-5s over four to six months without a single dramatic intervention: earlier dinners, a 20-minute walk after the largest meal of the day, and swapping white rice for a more fibre-forward version at lunch, not dinner. Nothing that required willpower as a personality trait — just repeated, unglamorous adjustments.

If you've been handed this number and told to 'watch your sugar' without much else, that's not really an answer. Ask what your number was a year ago if you have it. Ask what's changed in your sleep and your evenings, not just your plate. The trend line matters more than any single reading, and it's almost always more within your control than it first appears.
