On Mondays, and the myth of the fresh start

The name of this clinic is a small joke at our own expense. 'From Monday' is the sentence almost every client has said to us at some point in their life, usually right after a heavy weekend: from Monday, I'll eat clean. From Monday, no more sugar. From Monday, everything changes.

It rarely does, and it isn't because people lack discipline. It's because the fresh-start framing is quietly designed to fail. It treats change as a switch — off on Sunday night, on Monday morning — rather than what it actually is, which is a gradual shift in default behaviour that has to survive ordinary, imperfect weeks.

The goal isn't a dramatic Monday. It's a Tuesday that looks almost exactly like the Monday before it.

The fresh-start effect is a documented psychological pattern: we're more motivated to pursue goals right after a temporal landmark — a new week, a new month, a birthday. That motivation spike is real, but it's also short. Most 'Monday' plans are ambitious enough that they can only survive on that spike, and by Wednesday, when the spike has faded and real life has resumed, the plan collapses under its own weight.

What actually works looks much less dramatic. It starts on whatever day it starts on — a Tuesday, a Thursday, the middle of a hectic month — with one or two changes small enough to survive a bad day without being abandoned entirely. Add a vegetable to lunch. Walk after dinner. Have protein at breakfast instead of skipping it. Nothing that requires a clean slate or a perfect week to begin.

We named the clinic after the sentence we hear most, not because we believe in it, but because we spend most of our first sessions gently talking clients out of it. The goal isn't a dramatic Monday. It's a Tuesday that looks almost exactly like the Monday before it, and a month from now, a version of you that's quietly different without ever having declared a fresh start.
